I don't know what causes this, but it is driving me nuts! Every so often, when changing icon packages the "My Network Places" icon won't change. If I restore the Windows default icon set, it reverts to a previous icon from a set (Pixelorama), which I haven't used in a couple of months. Repair Icons doesn't work. Rebooting doesn't work.. nothing seems to work. If I try to change it back to the XP default using the shortcut's "Properties" it shows that the Windows default is already chosen. But the Start Menu icon for "My Network Places" changes fine and reverts to the correct Windows default icon. The same thing has been happening with the icon for "My Favorites" as well.

Any idea how to fix this aggravating situation? I'm very comfortable with modifying the Registry if that is what it would take.

have you tried doing manual change with iconpackager?

Yep, basically the same thing.. it shows the right icon for the package that is loaded, but it won't apply. I can choose an alternate icon, click "Apply", which will change and then go back to the correct icon and click "Apply" and it won't change. That's the same thing that happens when trying to change it in the Shortcut's properties. Click on "Change icon" and it defaults to the correct icon in the list, but that Pixelorama icon is displayed. Go figure????

Maybe as simple as clearing a cache or user settings? If there is such a thing with IP useage (IP would be allusers, huh). Set to default, clear cache/settings, reboot?

I know Corky O has suggested such for some of the other programs - even has a tute on his WC page.

I'd be willing to "clear the cache" if I knew where it was located and how to do it. hahaha Do you have a link for his "tute" so I can read it?

THANKS!!

Hapkido,

Unfortunately, clearing the cache is not applicable to Icon Packager.

Have you tried the following:

After using Icon Packager "Tools > Restore all Icons" - right-click empty spot on desktop > Properties > Desktop tab > Customize Desktop button > select My Network Places > Restore Default button.

There are a few icons that used to be displayed on the desktop by default in previous versions of Windows - My Documents, My Computer, My Network Places, Internet Explorer, and Recycle Bin.

In Windows XP, Microsoft decided that a clean desktop was the way to go, so they removed all with the exception of Recycle Bin - but left the option to display in Display Properties.

You may want to move the Pixelorama folder from the "C:\Program Files......\Icon Packager folder" to another location while not in use.

If interested, you can view my tutorials via my page here Link - I will be including one soon that looks at Display Properties (including the Desktop tab and Customize Desktop feature).

I hope this helps.

Okay..... that did the trick. I first moved the Pixelorama folder to another location and did as you suggested. After the default XP "My Network Places" icon was restored, I moved the it back to the IconPackager/Themes folder. Hopefully, things will now stick.

Thanks for your help! And I'll check out your tutorials.
